Why Am I Not Able To Use Bellsouth Email From Hotel Room?

The majority of hotel rooms offer internet facility these days. It has become a norm because the internet is an essential part of everybody’s life.

While it is easy to watch movies and TV shows on the internet that is being provided by the hotel, when it comes to sending/receiving emails, things can be a bit annoying at times. While it is a well-known fact that the email function is configured according to the SMTP server of the network service provider, but the hotel network sends your emails through their own dedicated email server in order to prevent any interference from the hackers/spammers.

Why hotels intercept emails?

You must be feeling a bit weird after finding out that hotels intercept emails and also restrict the number of emails that can be sent, but this is happening. The reason they are doing this is to safeguard their hotel internet connection.

They don’t want any spam email to be sent through their network because at times, that could result in blacklisting of the network. It is not a common thing to happen, but a reputed hotel will not take any chance when there are hundreds of guests staying at the hotel. This is why they intercept all the emails and filter out the ones that they found fishy.

Is there any way to overcome this issue?

Yes, there are certain techniques through which the problem can be solved. Some of those techniques are as below:

  1. Use of webmail: If your Internet service provider (ISP) has its own web interface, then that’s great, as you can send all your emails through that interface. You don’t have to use any other network at all in that case.
  2. Use of an alternate port: You can use some other port instead of ’25’, especially when it is creating issues. The ports that are usually provided by SMTP over SSL are ‘465’ and ‘587’, so you can use these ports as they are protected by SSL. Emails sent over these ports will not be intercepted. Moreover, you don’t have to change settings repeatedly, as these work anywhere and everywhere.
  3. Use of a VPN service: You can use a VPN service to protect your email delivery by bypassing the redirections. VPN is the best way to bypass any network securely.
